It is believed that diseases such as Mitral Valve Disease and Syringomyelia are inherited. Both of these are known to be serious problems in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels: but it is not currently known which dogs will remain completely clear or which are carriers who may pass on the problem to their offspring. The only way to identify carriers or clear dogs for both conditions is to develop a gene test, and for this researchers need blood from as many related Cavaliers as possible. The Club is collaborating with the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim in a Healthy Heart Partnership, and have started a project co-ordinated by Clare Rusbridge to collect and store Cavalier blood for DNA extraction. The Fund is paying for the cost of collecting blood from leading stud dogs, brood bitches, and their extended families.
